Exeter Head 2008
This event was the first of the 2008 calendar for the Western Region. It attracted a total of 115 entrants making for fierce competion The event was held over a 3.5 kilometre course along the Countess Wear Canal, starting at Turf Locks and heading back to the finish line after the Lime Kiln bends. The course was a testing one not only for the rowers but also for coxes who are often challenged buy negotiating narrow sections, sweeping bends, and open sections subject to cross winds, all contributing towards collisions with other boats and the bank side, of which there were a few. The event is run against the clock, with the fleet of boats being started at timed intervals, and their finishing time being recorded at the finish. Exmouth was represented well by its Rowing Club. A young talent and relative newcomer, Marcus Bowyer negotiated the course in his single scull in a time of 15.22 minutes to take first in the Mens Junior 15 class. In the Mens Senior C Class Double Scull Jack Pearce and Charlie Angel secured a second place in a time of 14.33 minutes. Exmouth entered a crew consisting of Rob Williams, Marcus Bowyer, Sam Malloy, Jack Pearce, and Ed Pearce (Cox) in the Mens Senior C Fours, who also came second in a time of 13.12 minutes. Considering the small party of entrants from Exmouth Rowing Club, they came away with very creditable results.
