Exeter Head Race 2009
The Exeter Winter Head race was another opportunity for Exmouth Rowing Club to test out their Winter training and Technique.
The course, held on Exeter canal started at the 'Turf Locks' and finished 4000 metres upstream at 'The Basin'.
Windy conditions created difficulty for the coxens and scullers to navigate the canal’s narrow bends and dodgy low bridge.
Exmouth's first entrants in the 1st Division, Sam Malloy & Chris Long raced against their team mates Jack Pearce & Charlie Angell in the Men's Double sculls in 14:36 and 14:26 respectively, with the faster time winning the category.
Also racing in the 1st Division, were Exmouth's Junior girls of Olivia Barnard, Serena McGuinness, Abbey Swain, Alice Vanstone and Ed Pearce (Cox) . The girls convincingly won the Women's Novice Quads in 16:45, beating their competition from Plymouth and Teign Scullers by over two minutes.
In the 2nd Division Rob Williams and James Ashby entered the Men's Senior A double sculls and placed 5th in a time of 15:04.
Also in the 2nd Division, Exmouth RC's longstanding Men's Senior C crew of Malloy, Long, Pearce, Angell and Ed Pearce (Cox) dominated the men's fours category beating the times of all higher ranking men's Senior A and B Fours with a time of 13:36. The boys took much pleasure in overtaking their rivals from Exeter in front of their home crowd and supporters.
A fantastic result for all of Exmouth's competitors, almost all ending the day with a tankard and another win under their belts.
