Appledore & Instow Regatta 2007

Nearly all of Exmouths competitors walked away with a win this year at the 6th Championship Regatta of 2007. Appledore & Instow Regatta is a 1000 metre sprint course held on the river Torridge which attracted competitors from almost all of WEARAs rowing clubs. First win of the day was from the Mens Senior C crew of Sam Malloy, Chris Long, Robbie Williams, Jack Pearce and Ed Pearce (Cox). This win took the boys by surprise, after getting a bad start and Rob coming off his seat! Once they found the pace that they had practiced in training sessions during the preceding weeks to the race, they rowed through everyone and secured a good length win. Charlie Angel and Jack Pearce entered into the J161x but due to the late start of the MSC4+ Jack missed the start and was disqualified. Charlie on the other hand made it to the start on time and gave a fine performance by sticking with the leading pack right to the end of the 1000 metre straight. Ed Pearce and Marcus Bowyer raced in the J131x in an All Exmouth final, Marcus took the win and Ed followed shortly behind. Mike Drew and Brian O dea also entered into an all Exmouth battle for the Mens Vet 1x trophy. Mike took the win but later on found out that Falmouth (previous winners of the the cup) did not return the trophy, so had to go home empty handed! Sam and Rob entered the MSC2x and achieved a dead heat with Exeter for 2nd place while Dartmouth took the win. Sam also placed 3rd in the Mens Senior C 1x. Exmouths other successes were found in the Double Sculls events, Chris and Jack won the Mens Novice 2x, while Jack also won the J162x partnered up with Charlie, beating some strong crews from Bideford. The Junior 16 Quad of Jack Pearce, Charlie Angel, Marcus Bowyer and Ed Pearce gratefully coxed by Sam Tilly from Dartmouth RC, once again gave an awesome performance. They placed 2nd, while beating many of the best junior crews of the West of England. Chris and Rob raced in the Mens Novice Single Sculls and both gave creditable performances. Chris beat his rival from Paignton for the first time and achieved 4th place overall, while Rob gave everyone at Appledore a scare by getting 2nd place overall in just his 3rd time out in a single scull!! Nice one chaps! Last up was Ed and Marcus in the Mens J142x. Due to some appalling umpiring, the race was started with a boat passing right in the way of the Exmouth lads. After being forced to stop to let the boat pass, they returned to contest it with the umpire to ask for a restart. The restart was not granted so Ed and Marcus decided to race down to the finish, only to catch up with the the 2 crews who were leading the race and be within a few feet of winning the race! ROBBED!! Exmouth placed 3rd overall with 19.5 regatta points, Dartmouth took the Regatta trophy with 23.
