The Ore Stone

It is obviously a great advantage in life to be young, fit, and healthy. But equally if possible to remain young at heart. Such an approach to life is often catered for by Exmouth Rowing Club, who equally supports the aspirations of the community’s youth and seniors alike. This was clearly evident in a row arranged through the club by a crew wishing to take on the challenge of an endurance row to The Ore Stone that can sometimes be seen from Exmouth Beach at the approaches to Torbay. The crew of Les Norcliffe, Graham Hurley, Mike Mulholland, Pete Bradshaw, and cox Lin Hurley, with a combined age of 283yrs set of from Exmouth Beach on 21 March 2009, supported by the clubs safety boat crewed by Tom Hurley and Ian Pain. Planned well in advance the weather offered good support in providing a good sea with a light breeze. Visibility was however limited by a haze that obscured the view of the target destination on both outward and return legs requiring the use of navigational aids. They completed the 24mile course in a rowing time of 4h 03min. All returned tired and very satisfied having faced up to this personal challenge. Exmouth Rowing Club does not require this level of performance but can cater for competitive and recreational rowing for all ages. The club is situated behind the inshore lifeboat station on the sea front and offers free sample rows on Sunday mornings between 10am and 12 noon.
