Exmouth Rowing Club is pleased to announce that for the second time The National Lottery through Awards for All has come to the support of the club with a grant of £10,000.
The club is run totally by volunteers and strives to offer a sustainable rowing opportunity for the community as a whole. It has seen a sharp rise in membership over the past year and its current fleet of offshore boats are simply not enough to support the level of interest. An application was made to the fund with a view to enhancing the clubs offshore rowing activities through the purchase of new boats.
The governing body of world rowing, FISA, now recognises offshore rowing as an event and three years ago held the first Offshore World Club regatta in Guernsey. Exmouth fully supported the event and has since sent crews to subsequent events in France and Italy. The next event will be held at Plymouth 23-25 October 2009.
Through this involvement it has become apparent that the clubs current but old fleet of boats desperately need replacing. With this in mind the club set about raising money for its boat fund. Through its own efforts, and with support from Exmouth Town Council the club had raised enough to make a purchase. This grant however comes as the cherry on the cake, because with this substantial cash injection the club will now be able to look to purchase two fully equipped boats, to help the club compete at a better level, and to support the entire membership for years to come.
