Honours all-round for Exmouth rowers at Falmouth Regatta

EXMOUTH Rowing Club travelled to Cornwall last Saturday (July 23) to participate in the annual Falmouth Regatta staged on Stithians Lake.

The Mixed Novice Four of Charlie Angell, Sophie Douglas, Sophie Medlock and last minute replacement crew member Lawrence O’Dea were simply outstanding on the day.

What made their performance all the more impressive was that, prior to the day, the quartet had never raced as a group together!

They claimed three wins in their straight final.

The club’s Dynamic Duo of Chris Long and Charlie Angell were once more on top of their game winning both their hear and the final in the Men’s Novice Double.

Another success came in the Women’s Novice Double where the scratch crew of Sophie Douglas of Exmouth and Fiona Carmichael of Mayflower, surprised both spectators and commentators as they picked up the rate in the last half of the course after coming off the start line in last place!

Charlie Angell won the Men’s Senior C heat and then finished second in the final.

The Ladies Novice Crew of Fiona Pink, Kim Tapper, Sophie Medlock and Sophie Douglas also came a close second in their race.

Chris Long raced in the Men’s Novice Single, coming second in his heat and progressing to the final where he came in a very respectable third.

Coach and club captain, Brian O’Dea said: “I am delighted how the crews have approached and contested this event. Despite many being scratch crews on the day and the added complication of uncharacteristically stunning weather, our crews revelled in the near-perfect rowing conditions. It was a most satisfactory regatta for us”.
