ERC Conquer Ramsey Island!
Two crews from Exmouth Rowing Club journied to West Wales at the weekend to compete in the prestigious Ramsay Island Rowing Race. They joined Celtic Longboat and Gig rowers to row clockwise around the Island which is an RSPB reserve a mile offshore from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
After a storming start in a field of 27 boats, ERC’s top womens’ crew (Rachel Tarr, Ali Giles, Anna Childs, Ali Martineau plus cox Mike Drew) took and held the lead, finishing the 12.5 kilometres in 1hr 4mins 42 seconds, thus smashing the course record by more than two minutes. Acknowledging generous applause from the beach at the end of the race, stroke Anna Childs said: “That was unbelievable. We’re all in training for the World Offshore Championships in Italy in October. A result like this means we must be doing something right.”
Exmouth’s second crew (Lin Hurley, Dave McDermott, Graham Hurley, Kate Hurley plus cox Marc Martineau) crossed the finishing line in fifth place, thus winning the Mixed Crew category. Said stroke Lin Hurley, “Brilliant scenery, great company, fantastic racing and a ceilidh to follow. Does life get any better than that?”
A fantastic time was had by all, and compliments go to Porthgain Rowing Club for their superb organisation, and great hospitality!
